Financial Aspects

The cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs. 5.35 (in 2003) lakh Crores. The project will take 2 years for investigation and 7 years for completion and the amount can be spread out. Since Medium size ships and boats can ply in this waterway providing economical transport, the revenue from the transport and betterment levy will be able to offset the cost. By using the waterways there will be appreciable fuel saving and maintenance costs of waterways are comparatively cheap. The return from the additional food production alone will be over Three Lakh Crores every year.

For example in Rajasthan, some 20 years back INDRA GANDHI canal was built at a cost of Rs. 70 Crores. But now the income generated is about Rs. 700 Crores every year from the project. An outlay of Rs. 70/- crores has brought about a return of Rs. 700/- crores, 10 times more. The life pattern of the people in this area has also dramatically improved
