  1. How Hydro power can be generated?             

The water way will have mini reservoirs at the confluence of river. The level difference between the waterway and sea level will be utilized to generate electricity.

 

  1. How the Waterways will absorb the floods when it occurs at the same time like in Kosi and other tributaries of River Ganges.  

The flood carrying capacity of the waterway has been designed suitably to carry the flood or allow the flood in a controlling way in the River Course. The waterway is capable of absorbing flood even when it occurs at the same time in many rivers. Besides the flood water can be detoured so that the maximum flood can be reduced.

 

  1. How the Waterways will provide solution to the floods of Chennai?

Waterways will retain flood water when there is flood, divert and regulate to reduce peak flood.

 

  1. How the Waterways will help the upper regions of Waterways?

As the downstream will use water from the waterways, the upper regions can store and use water in  their region as the demand from downstream will get reduced.

 

  1. Is the Cost of the project high?

Returns from the project is high and the investment can be retrieved  within a few years

 

  1. How the flow of water will be maintained in a contour canal when there is no slope in the canal?

The flow of water is maintained by differential head of water and water can flow in both the directions.

 

  1. Any socio economic study has been done with regard to the proposed project?

At the outset, this project brings enormous benefits to the people and the country like providing water  for drinking and irrigation. There will be greenery everywhere and the ground water level will rise in many areas. Rehabilitation and Resettlement can be done appropriately as the project brings good  nature.  Further navigation will reduce pollution.

 

  1. How about the Environmental effects of the proposal?

Due to afforestation, fuel conservation and other factors, the environment will be enhanced and global warming reversed by the Smart Waterways Project.

 

  1. Due to confluence of waters from different rivers, what will be the effect on different species of animals living in the rivers?

New Ecological order will be created. Further rain is the only source of water for all the rivers. Already many rivers join in Ganges. The Periyar to Vaigai is a standing example.

 

  1. Everybody is talking about the Inter Linking of Rivers proposal. Is your proposal same as ILR?

NWP is different from ILR in many aspects. In ILR once water is given, it cannot be taken back. In NWP proposal, the donor region can also become recipient. Water flow in NWP is two way whereas  in ILR, it is one way flow. Navigation is very limited in ILR. In NWP, Smart Navigation throughout the year is possible. There is no pumping of water in NWP unlike ILR.

 

  1. How the project is feasible without pumping water at any point?

The waterway is at one contour level (same level) and hence pumping is not required. Flow of water in the contour canal is due to differential head. Further water from Himalayan waterway (at 500m)  will flow to Central and Southern waterways (at 300m) generating power using the level difference.

 

  1. The Balancing Waterways does not have slope. How do you expect water to flow?

Balancing waterway is not a canal. It acts like a reservoir, a serpentine reservoir. Only the canals need slope. Dams and Reservoirs do not need slope. Still water flows in Dams. Flow of water is due to differential head just as flow of current is due to differential voltage.

 

  1. Is it not unscientific to divert the rivers?

We are impounding only 25% of the flood waters and the balance quantity is allowed to have its natural flow. We have diverted Periar water to Vaigai and it is not unscientific.

 

  1. Bihar is suffering from flood and drought every year. Does your Waterways Project give solution to this?

Bihar state was the first to accept the proposal and they ordered for Detailed Project Report (DPR). Our proposal is best suited for Bihar.

 

  1. When the water in Smart Waterways is still and not flowing, will it not support the growth of algae and fungi?

Water from Balancing Waterways will be supplied with fresh water and taken out for various purposes like drinking and irrigation. Hence there cannot be any growth of algae and fungi.

 

  1. Is there any Waterway in the world, where only artificial canals are used for navigation?                  

There are many artificial canals used for Navigation in Netherland, Canada, etc. But the Smart Waterway proposed will be the first of its kind, for transfer of water as well.

 

  1. Is Land acquisition will be a problem?

Other projects will need 6% to 10% of land acquisition whereas in NWP only 2% of land is acquired. Moreover as there are huge returns in NWP, compensation can be given generously. Farmers will be happy as they will get sufficient water for their land.

 

  1. Have you done any field studies about the project?

Yes, we have done many field studies

 

  1. Have you constructed any model to prove your concept?

We have constructed three models as proof of our concept.

  1. Is the water in National Waterways (NWW) will be stagnate and will become dirty?

The National Waterways (NWW) will be fed from Balancing Waterways with fresh water to keep the  NWW clean. Water can also be drawn for drinking, Irrigation etc. from NWW and it is fed with fresh water from Balancing Waterways regularly.

 

  1. Will the forests be affected by this project?

When Waterways comes into existence, there will be forest growth along the waterways. More forests  will come on both sides of the contour canal that stretches for about 15,000 Km.

 

  1. Will the waterway cause any disadvantages or negative impact in the residential areas located on its way?

There may be problem in land acquisition. But we are planning liberal compensation. Further land  required for the project is just 20 to 25% of land compared with other project proposals.

 

  1. What are the problems expected in the implementation of the project?

While taking forest lands, we will give 2 acres of land when the Forest Department offers 1 acre of land. Forests can be developed in these lands.

 

  1. Some people felt that flood water is advantageous since the water which carries lot of minerals will make the land fertile?

We are using only 25% of the flood water which goes to sea and still 75% of the flood water will go to sea. Besides, water for irrigation also carries floating particles with it and deposits on land making fertile.

 

  1. Depending on the rainfall, if Godavari region is having copious water and Cauvery region is dry, whether the water will flow to full level or only a percentage?

A flow of water in the waterway, though free, is controllable by suitable arrangements. Hence suitable  quantity can be allowed. We can divert maximum water.

 

  1. Whether evaporation loss has been considered?

Yes, evaporation loss has been taken into the account.

 

  1. Whether leakage of water in various storage dam have been considered?

Leakage of water from storage dams will not be there and therefore it is not considered. Only evaporation loss is taken into account. However, percolation from waterways is taken into account.

 

  1. Can you take the canal in mountain range?

Yes, we can take the canal in mountain range where it is necessary. But we find most of the path, the waterways runs is in planes despite the fact that it runs at 250m or 500m MSL.

 

  1. Why don’t you just connect adjacent rivers?

This is what you do in NWDA proposal. But this will not be quite effective in controlling flood or  drought since the adjacent river will also have the same problem of flood or drought.

 

  1. Have you included the cost for expanding agricultural activities?

No, expanding agricultural activities is State subject. We will make the water  available to the States and it is for them to develop the agriculture.

 

  1. The National Waterways goes to certain areas only- what about other areas?

The waterways goes in certain areas only. This is like National Highways, which also goes only in  certain areas. However, water will reach down below up to sea.

 

  1. You can use water for power generation or irrigation only. So when you generate power you cannot use it for irrigation, is it not?

It is possible to use the same water after power generation for irrigation. But this may not be always possible.

 

  1. Water flows at the same level. How will you get power?

The waterways run at 250m and 500m contours. Hence it is possible to generate power just like generating power in a Dam.

 

  1. How will you get water storage with just 30m high dams?

The water is stored not only just in Dams, but also in the balancing waterways. This is one of the major advantages of the system. Hence it is enough to have the height of the dam at 30m causing minimum displacement.

  1. If there is breach what is the solution?

The waterway is so designed that there will not be any breach. However in case it occurs, we have planned to arrest the same speedily by using RCC platoons and breach arresting ship.
